Online Personal Training for ultrarunning
What the coaching covers

Over the hills & far away: Build Stamina for Long Days on the Trail
- Cardio Conditioning: Running, cycling, and (mountain) hiking drills designed to improve cardiovascular fitness.
- Long-Distance Runs & Hikes: Simulated sessions to prepare you for sustained activity.
- Interval Training: High-intensity intervals to boost your stamina and recovery speed.
- Recovery Techniques: Learn the importance of recovery days to maximize your endurance gains and prevent burnout.
Mental Training
- Visualization Techniques: Imagine your success on the trail to build confidence and reduce anxiety.
- Mindfulness Practices: Learn breathing exercises and mental grounding techniques to stay present and manage stress during difficult moments.
- Overcoming Trail Obstacles: Tips for pushing through when fatigue, weather, or uncertainty strikes.

Don't stop me now: Strength training
- Lower Body Power: Squats, lunges, and step-ups to handle steep ascents and descents.
- Core Stability: Plank variations and rotational exercises to maintain balance on uneven ground.
- Upper Body Strength: Push-ups, pull-ups, and pack-carrying drills.
- Recovery and Mobility: Stretching routines to keep your body ready for the next run.
Cheesburger in paradise: Nutrition and gut training
Ultrarunning presents unique challenges for your body. Our training plans include fueling that actually works on long days, at altitude and over back-to-back long days.
- Energy and Nutrition Tips: Guidance on meeting calorie needs during long hikes and training, balancing energy levels, and understanding hydration.

Imaging when you were young: Training for your body & age
Training in middle-age might need a different approach than training when you were younger:
- Hormonal Considerations: Adapt workouts around menstrual cycles, perimenopause, menopause & andropause to optimize energy and recovery.
- Confidence and Safety: Develop mental strategies for overcoming fears, setting boundaries, and staying safe while adventuring solo or in groups.
- Female Coach: Get fit with a backpacking and fitness expert with years of experience on the trails and in sports who is also a certified Women’s Coaching Specialist.
Gear & alpine experience
Knowing in what kind of terrain you will be running and testing the right gear before a long competition is as important as your training and nutrition. I will share my experiences from running & trekking in alpine environments all over the world.
- The piece most training plans skip: get to know exposure and terrain in the high mountains, especially if your past ultras were run outside the Alps.
- From the streets to the Alps: How to transition from road running to trailrunning while staying safe and finish strong.
- Recommendation how to train for the mountains even if you don’t have mountains close to where you life.

About Mountain Brat
Hi, I’m Kathrin, and I combine my passion for hiking, trail running, and outdoor adventures with my enthusiasm for planning and preparing (mountain) hikes and expeditions. In addition to personal projects in the Alps, the Pyrenees, Patagonia, Canada, and the U.S., I’ve prepared glacier expeditions as an expedition coordinator for Girls* on Ice Switzerland and, as an athlete manager at ultrarunning events, I help people cross the finish line happy.
I have a background in competitive sports and used to be a competitive volleyball athlete. I’m a certified high-performance coach for volleyball and I’m coaching kids and adults since I’m 14. At some point, playing volleyball & beachvolleyball wasn’t enough so I started mountaineering and running half-marathons. Soon both passions merged into one and I discovered trailrunning. Since 2024 I’m a certified Women’s Coaching Specialist. My diverse background in sports and coaching allows me to create uique training plans and be a coach that focuses on your journey as an athlete instead of only seeing numbers on a spreadsheet or on Strava.
My base camp is in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. With a view of the mountains, I’m already planning my next tours or getting creative. Because in addition to running in the mountains, I can also organize creative workshops and create up a custom illustration based on your hike or running adventure. You can learn more about me and Mountain Brat here.

FAQ
I've never trained with a coach before. Is that a problem?
No – most clients arrive as capable, self-taught athletes who want expert eyes on their plan for the first time. The discovery call is where we figure out the right starting point together.
Do I need to live in Europe or plan to race there?
No. Coaching is fully online and works from anywhere. Clients join from the US, across Europe, and from Asia, often training for a race or expedition happening in the Alps, which is where I live and train myself.
What if I need to change packages later?
You can move between packages at any monthly renewal. Many clients start with a training plan and then move to the personal training packages when the event is getting closer.
Do you offer scholarships?
Trailrunning and training should be open of everyone, no matter how much money you have. And I would love to see a more diverse group of trailrunners out there. That’s why I offer scholarships that include free or discounted coaching. Just send me an email to hello@mountainbrat.com to see if there is an availability.
I had a DNF in my last race - can you help me with that?
Unfortunately, many runners DNF on their first alpine race. I will support you and make you fit for your next race.
